What is the Legion of Mary?
Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic organization. Our goal is to carry on the Blessed Mother's mission to bring the light of her Divine Son, Jesus Christ, to a world in desperate need of His mercy. The primary goal of the Legion is first to glorify God by the holiness of its members. The Legion helps us to develop this personal habit of holiness through prayer and works of faith. We meet weekly to come together in prayer and to form ourselves in our faith. We then take that faith and put it into action, joining in the apostolic mission of the Church.
The Legion was founded by Servant of God, Frank Duff, whose cause for canonization is under consideration. He drew inspiration from True Devotion to Mary, by St. Louis Marie de Montfort. The first meeting took place in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7th, 1921. Since then it has grown to several hundred members in approximately 170 countries. The Legion seeks to foster a deeper devotion to Mary among all people, and through her, devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Legion of Mary is layperson led, sanctioned by the Catholic Church, supported by several Popes, and by bishops, priests and religious all around the world. The Legion acts only with ecclesiastical approval and in loyalty to the Magisterium and the teaching of the Catholic Church. We seek to actively participate in the life of our parishes, acting always in union with the pastor and our spiritual directors. Legionaries strive to follow Mary's example of devotion to Jesus and compassion for all those who suffer and are marginalized, working under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
